1,144,493. Selective hydrogenation of dienes. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 18 May, 1966 [31 May, 1965], No. 22975/65. Heading C5E. Diolefins are selectively hydrogenated in the presence of mono-olefins by contact with hydrogen at a temperature below 250‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a Group II, III or IV refractory inorganic oxide (e.g. Al 2 O 3 , MgO, or SiO 2 ) and nickel as the hydrogenating component, said component having been added to the oxide by an ion-exchange technique and not having been reduced to elemental nickel prior to the hydrogenation. A suitable ion-exchange technique is described in Specification 1,144,494. The catalyst is preferably pretreated with a stream of nitrogen or hydrogen at a temperature of 100‹ C. upwards but below 250‹ C. The selective hydrogenation of isoprene is illustrated, and the process may be used to reduce the diene content of by-product gasolines obtained in cracking processes. |
