A chlorine atom is introduced into a position beta to the hydroxy group of trichloromethyl alkanols of the formula i n which R 1 is an alkyl group and R 2 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl group, by reaction with chlorine in the presence of actinic light and/or a free radical initiator. The reaction may be effected in the presence of an inert solvent at 20-200‹ C. In the absence of a solvent it is preferred to operate at a temperature above the melting point of the alkanol. A suitable source of actinic light is an U.V. lamp. Specified free radical initiators are acyl and alkyl peroxides and azo compounds. Alkanols containing more than 4 carbon atoms may be obtained as sideproducts, particularly when a molar excess of chlorine is employed. Examples relate to the preparation of 1,1,1,3 - tetrachloro - 2 - methyl - 2 - propanol and 1 - trichloromethyl - 1 - methyl- 2-chloro-propanol-( 1).
