[Also in Group XXVI] A seal ring 46, which may be of "Stellite" (Registered Trade Mark), for a mechanical seal (see Group XXVI) is first lapped to form a relieved portion 54 and a flat radial band. The ring is then held in a rotatable chuck 48 by an elastic material torus 52, identical to that to be used in service, and lapped under substantially the same axial pressure to which it will be subjected in use, for example 100 pounds, on an annnular internal frustoconical surface 44 of a circular table 40 freely rotatable on a spindle 42. This results in an external frusto-conical surface, Fig. 10, which, when the axial pressure is relieved from the ring, forms an internal frusto-conical sealing band 36, Fig. 11.</p> |
