The clutch release abutment has an actuator (2) with a front part (6) having a stop roller (10) to engage the clutch diaphragm. The actuator has a rear radial section (28) extending outwardly and with two symmetrical recesses (29a,b) to allow the axial engagement of the abutment surfaces (64,65) of the control fork with the recesses. A catch on the axial actuator portion (26) prevents inverse axial movement. Claims include a method of assembling the clutch release stop
