Apparatus for testing tokens of varied sizes comprises opposite walls in part defining a chute through which a token 10 is adapted to pass and a first token characteristic sensing means 191 for sensing a first token characteristics during token movement along said token path. The first token characteristic sensing means 191 is constructed and arranged for sensing each token substantially along a token path centre line of said token path whereby on-axis token sensing is effected. At least one of the said opposite walls 102 is transparent and a light source means 260 such as an LED emits light through said transparent wall 102 toward the chute. The transparent wall 102 has an in situ formed lens means 193 for directing light rays at a predetermined angle to thereby properly impinge upon tokens moving through the chute. The apparatus has means 261 such as a photodetector for sensing light emanating from each token during movement thereof along the token path. Each of said opposite walls may be transparent.
