PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform recording operation smoothly by reducing occurrence of mechanical errors due to carriage lock operation or carriage unlock operation. SOLUTION: A printer comprises a carriage reciprocating in the main scanning direction, and a member for locking the carriage to the home position side. After delivering a control command for executing carriage unlock operation, the printer executes a routine for determining actual unlock of the carriage. In the routine for determining actual unlock, a control command for moving the carriage across the emerging/retracting position of the carriage lock member is delivered and, at the same time, variation in the current level of the carriage motor is monitored. If the current level increases suddenly, a decision is made that the carriage is abutted against the carriage lock member and stopped thus detecting the fact that the carriage is not unlocked actually.
