PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems that conventional light-weight aggregate contributes nothing to the functional improvement for concrete except weight reduction of concrete, and that working such as bolting on a building material is not possible because the light-weight aggregate itself cracks by such a working. SOLUTION: This light-weight aggregate comprises a wood-based material 11 as a main component added with a binding material to bond the wood-based material 11 to each other followed by mixing the both materials and heating to produce the light-weight aggregate 30. This light-weight aggregate 30 can be performed of working such as bolting while keeping light-weight because using wood-based material as a main component. Also it is possible to blend a third functional material at the mixing/heating as the light-weight aggregate 30 itself has elasticity. Therefore a building material produced by using the light-weight aggregate 30 can realize various functions in addition to imparting high strength to the building material 50.
