PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a good recording quality on a sheet in case of a record pattern having a high recording duty. SOLUTION: A recorder comprising a platen 17 supported resiliently and movably in the direction approaching a recording head 11 or receding therefrom, and the recording head for recording an image on a sheet carried between the head and the platen is further provided with a mechanism 31 prestored with a relation between a pattern being recorded by the recording head and the allowable displacement of the platen in the direction receding from the recording head, at the time of recording operation of the platen and restraining the platen to recede from the recording head exceeding the allowable displacement. A control board section detects the recording pattern of an image to be recorded prior to recording operation by the recording head, and controls the restraining mechanism such that displacement of the platen in the direction receding from the recording head does not exceed the allowable displacement corresponding to a detected recording pattern at the time of recording operation.
