PURPOSE: Provided are a method and an apparatus for crushing materials by thermal deformation which efficiently crushes materials such as base rocks, ceramics and other materials with a low elasticity. CONSTITUTION: The method includes the steps of preparing a white light source of a high intensity including an arc lamp; and irradiating the white light from the white light source to a material to be crushed such as a base rock or ceramics in a predetermined direction. The step of irradiation is performed by changing the intensity of the white light so as to give a change in the surface temperature of the material to be crushed, thereby inducing thermal deformation of the material. The apparatus includes an arc lamp, an air shielder and a reflector.
