PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for identifying a coin capable of discriminating periodical linear rugged pattern or character stamp formed on the side surface of a coin precisely and speedily. SOLUTION: The side surface of the coin C dropping in an advancing direction through a coin path 101 is irradiated with light 105 by a light source for flash imaging 104 and reflected light 106 reflected on the side surface of the coin C is inputted by an image sensor 107. Thus, the image of the side surface of the coin C is picked up, and a vertical direction projection arithmetic part 110 and an oblique direction projection arithmetic part 111 perform projection arithmetic to the picked up image. Then, based on two one-dimensional waveforms obtained from the result of the projection arithmetic, a cut mark pitch detection part 112 discriminates the presence/absence of cut marks at the coin C and a cut mark direction detection part 113 discriminates the direction of the cut marks at the coin C. Based on the result of discrimination, an identification part 115 identifies the coin C.
