<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a plane optical-optical switch which operates at high repeat rate with low power, and can carry out high speed and large capacity communication. SOLUTION: In an optical switch which controls on-off of a signal light by on-off of the control light having a periodic structure in which two kinds of semiconductor layers with different refractive indexes are alternately laminated, inter-bands transition energy of the semiconductor layer (Al0.123 Ga0.877 As) having small inter-bands transition energy among the semiconductor periodic structure layers 12 which consist of the two kinds of semiconductor layers (Al0.123 Ga0.877 As/AlAs) is two times of photon energy of the control light and signal light, and thickness of each layer is set toλ/4ni (where,λis the wavelength of the control light and signal light and ni (i=1, 2) are refractive indexes of the two kinds of semiconductor layers).</p> |
