PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyphenylene ether resin composition ensuring good surface appearance, improving rigidity, maintaining strength and having excellent balance of physical properties. SOLUTION: This polyphenylene ether resin composition contains a polyphenylene ether resin and a layer compound treated with a polyether compound having a cyclic hydrocarbon group. The composition is characterized by preferably satisfying at least one condition of the following (a) to (c): (a) the ratio of the layer compound having an equivalent area circle diameter [D] of 3000Åor less is 20% or more in the layer compound, (b) the average value of the equivalent area circle diameter [D] in the total layer compound is 5000Åor less, and (c) [N] value is 30 or more. Herein, the [N] value is defined as a particle number per a unit ratio of the layer compound being present in 100μm<2> of the area of the resin composition.
