PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that can accurately read an original image even when the image reader reads the original image while a document automatic feed means is feeding the original to the image reader and to provide its control method and a storage medium. SOLUTION: An original for calibrating the automatic document feeder is set to an original feed tray of the automatic document feeder, shading correction data of one line are read and a shading correction coefficient obtained by an arithmetic operation is set to a coefficient memory (S1-S3). Then a mirror unit to read the original image is moved under a skimming-through original glass plate, skimming-through of the original is started (S4), while the shading correction coefficient set to the coefficient memory in a shading correction circuit is corrected by each line (S5), a memory reads the original image data (S6), and when the image data stored in the memory are not read with a prescribed gradation characteristics, a correction table is set to a lookup table (S7).
