PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical communication system which uses a surface light emitting semiconductor laser element chip whose operation voltage and oscillation threshold current can be reduced as a light emitting source and which does not require another light reception element having sensitivity in the wavelength of 1.1μm to 1.7μm as the light reception element. SOLUTION: An n-semiconductor distribution Bragg reflection mirror 3 is formed on an n-GaAs substrate 2 and an n-Gax In1-x Py As1-y layer 11 in the thickness ofλ/4 is laminated on it. An undope lower GaAs spacer layer 4, a multiplex quantum well active layer constituted of an active layer (quantum well active layer) 12 being the Gax In1-x As quantum well layer of three layers and of a GaAs barrier layer (20 nm) 13 and an undope upper GaAs spacer layer 4 are laminated. Then, a resonator in thickness (thickness ofλ) for one wavelength of an oscillation wavelengthλin a medium is formed.
