PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly reliable discharge lamp lighting device which can identify automatically a discharge lamp type properly, then operates properly preheating control and lighting control based on an identified result of the discharge lamp, and can be commonly used for a plurality of different types of discharge lamps. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device is equipped with a switching current detecting means CT detecting flowing current at switching elements Q1, Q2 structuring an inverter circuit INV and a discharge lamp identifying means DCM identifying a type of the discharge lamp LA based on phase difference against high frequency voltage of the switching current detected at the switching current detecting means CT, and a control circuit CC makes a control suited for the property of the discharge lamp LA based on the identifying result of the discharge lamp identifying means DCM.
