<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a medicine having activating actions on mitochondrial functions. SOLUTION: This mitochondrial function activator comprises a 1,2-ethanediol derivative represented by formula [1] [wherein, R<1> denotes a heterocyclic group which may be substituted; R<2> denotes hydrogen atom or a hydroxy protecting group; R<3> denotes hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; n R<4> and n R<5> are each the same or different and denote each hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; R<6> denotes amino group or ammonio group which may be substituted; and (n) denotes an integer of 1-6] or its salt having the activating actions on the mitochondrial functions. Thereby, the mitochondrial function activator is useful for therapy and prophylaxis of neurodegenerative diseases, other central nervous system diseases, mitochiondriopathy, circulatory diseases, non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, paropsia, senile deafness, hepatopathy, cancer, and the like.</p> |
