PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that can accurately correct a read image even when dust or the like is deposited onto its light source or steep uneven luminous quantity takes place on the light source so as to prevent production of an artifact on the image. SOLUTION: After collecting a luminous quantity distribution of an illumination light from a light source 21 attenuated through a plurality of reference films F1, F2 with different density, a plurality of the amplified luminous quantity distributions amplified at a proper amplification factor respectively are stored as correction reference distributions, and any of a plurality of the correction reference distributions is selected depending on an output of a CCD line sensor 23 for pixels in the vicinity of a correction target pixel and the correction target pixel is calculated. Thus, even when dust or the like is deposited on the light source 21 resulting in causing a steep luminous quantity unevenness, the reference distribution including scattered component of light by the reference films F1, F2 can be used, so that production of artifact can be suppressed and an excellent image from an X-ray film can be obtained.
