PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Raman amplifier having excellent signal light transmission quality. SOLUTION: The zero dispersion wavelength λ0 of an optical waveguide which Raman-amplifies signal light by receiving exciting light differs from the central wavelength λcenter (=(λS,rms +λP,rms )/2) of the average wavelength λS,rms of the signal light and the average wavelength λP,rms of the exciting light. When the dispersion slope d of the optical waveguide for the Raman amplification is positive, the zero dispersion wavelength λ0 of the optical waveguide for the Raman amplification is shorter than central wavelength λcenter . Alternatively, when the dispersion slope d of the optical waveguide for the Raman amplification is negative, the zero dispersion wavelength λ0 of the optical waveguide for the Raman amplification is longer than central wavelength λcenter . |
