A thickener for excavating slurry having excellent anti-cement staining, hard to be rotted, and suppressing a foamability causing an operational problem, an excavating slurry using the thickener, and cast-inplace underground pile work method and underground continuous wall work method using the excavating slurry, the thickener for excavating slurry comprising alkali thickening emulsion, the excavating slurry comprising the thickener for excavating slurry providing the apparent specific gravity of 1.05 g/ml or more when measured immediately after strong stirring and the apparent specific gravity of 1.10 g/ml or more when measured 10 minutes after the strong stirring in a strongly stirring foaming test for a material obtained by adding alkali substance to the thickener.
