PURPOSE: A composition containing curcumin of formula 1 extracted from Curcuma longa L. or derivatives thereof and a pharmaceutically acceptable salt exhibiting excellent prophylactic effect on dementia is provided which can be effectively used in the treatment of dementia. CONSTITUTION: A prophylactic and therapeutic composition for dementia contains 2 to 70% by weight of a Curcuma longa extract, 1 to 10% by weight of edible spirits, 0.5 to 3% by weight of an excipient or diluent, 0.5 to 3% by weight of betacyclodextrin, 0.5 to 5% by weight of a sweetening agent, 0.1 to 1% by weight of a surfactant, 0.5 to 5% by weight of an antioxidant such as vitamin C, vitamin E and a mixture thereof, 0.001 to 1% by weight of a fragrance and 25 to 70% by weight of distilled water.
