The cross member which is especially for an instrument panel in a motor vehicle consists of two sections joined by a connecting element which is constructed as a plug-in sleeve (8). The plug-in sleeve has a first section (9) for a twist-resistant plug-in connection with one end of the first cross member section, and a second section (10) for a twist-resistant plug-in connection with one end of the second cross member section. The first and second sleeve sections are arranged one behind the other when viewed in the cross member's longitudinal direction.
