Branched and unbranched alkenes are separated by bringing a mixture of these alkenes into contact with a catalyst which disproportionates alkenes; in this way, the branched alkene is oligomerised, and the oligomer is then separated from the reaction mixture. The process is of particular use for separating isobutene from mixtures with butene-1 and/or butene-2. Suitable catalyst include molybdenum oxide, tungsten oxide, rhenium oxide or cobalt oxide, on a carrier. The temperature is between -20 and 450 deg.C., preferably 40-300 deg.C., the pressure is 1-50 atmos., and the space rate is 0.5-5000, preferably 1-50 g of alkene/g. of catalyst/hour. Separation of the products may be by distillation. |
