The roll winding core at a machine for the production of paper or cardboard, has a preferably hollow cylindrical core body with a mantle surface, and with bearing journals at both end sides. The mantle surface is cleaned by the scraper or rotary brush of a cleaning unit, to detach any clinging paper material and/or ink, which drops into a trough for collection and return to a pulper. The roll winding core (2) at a machine for the production of paper or cardboard, has a preferably hollow cylindrical core body (3) with a mantle surface (4), and with bearing journals (6.1, 6.2) at both end sides (5.1, 5.2). The mantle surface is cleaned by the scraper or rotary brush of a cleaning unit (8), to detach any clinging paper material and/or ink, which drops into a trough (15) for collection and return to a pulper. The cleaning unit scrapes the mantle surface over a working width (Bw) of 250-1000 mm and preferably 400-800 mm.
