A video signal processing apparatus capable of improving judgment accuracy related to a video source of an input video signal and employing a scan method appropriate for an output video signal in accordance with the type of the video source identified,thereby realizing a preferable video display.Video source judgment means which determines whether a video source of a video signal is a film source comprises calculation means for calculating a difference between a field image of a video signal and a field image of a delayed video signal,threshold value setting means,comparison means for comparing the difference with a threshold value and judging an image matching for each field,and signal pattern detection means for detecting a signal pattern of a signal output from the comparison means and deciding whether the video source is a film source.Different threshold values are output in a state when the video source is decided to be a film source and in a state when the video source is decided to be not a film source.
