Phthalamide derivatives represented by the general formula (I); insecticides for agricultural and horticultural use, containing the derivatives as the active ingredient; and a method for application thereof: (I) wherein R<sp>1</sp>, R<sp>2</sp> and R<sp>3</sp> are each independently hydrogen, C<sb>1−6</sb> alkyl, C<sb>3−6</sb> alkenyl, or C<sb>3−6</sb> alkynyl; X and Y<sp>3</sp> are each independently halogeno; Y<sp>1</sp> and Y<sp>2</sp> are each independently hydrogen, halogeno, nitro, cyano, C<sb>1−6</sb> alkyl, or the like; and n is an integer of 0 to 2.
