[Also in Division C3] A diagnostic agent for the detection of components in body fluids is a film which is resistant to hydrolysis and is substantially non- swellable in aqueous media and in which reagents for the diagnostic test are substantially uniformly distributed. A suspension or solution of natural or synthetic film forming polymer containing the reagents is applied to a substrate, for example synthetic resin foil, glue, wood, paper or metal foil and the film dried; it may be stripped from the substrate or used thereon. Examples relate to detection of glucose in urine or full blood using glucose oxidase compositions in films of polyvinyl propionate which may contain polymannuronic acid, or ethyl cellulose films; detection of blood in urine using a polyvinyl acetate film containing o-toluidine, strontium peroxide, tartaric acid, calcium acetate and silicic acid; detection or urobilinogen in urine using a polyvinyl acetal film containing p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde, phosphoric acid and a sulphonate, detection of nitrite in urine using a polyvinyl butyracetal film containingα- naphthylamine, sulphanilamide and trichloracetic acid; detection of urea in urine, serum or blood using a urease composition in a polyisobutylene film containing sodium alginate; and there is a reference to the detection of uric acid with uricase peroxidase and a colourforming agent.
