PURPOSE: A projection system and projection method is provided to achieve improved contrast ratio by efficiently filtering the light at a signal off state, while reducing size of optical signal. CONSTITUTION: A projection system comprises a light source(1) for radiating white light; a fly eye lens(3a) and a polarization conversion unit(3b) for uniformization of the light radiated from the light source and conversion of the light into wavelength of a specific component; a color separation unit(5) for separating the light passed through the fly eye lens and the polarization conversion unit into R, G and B lights; a total internal reflection prism(9) having a reflecting plane arranged to have a predetermined angle with respect to the optical axis of the light source, and which total-reflects the light at a predetermined angle; a reflection type liquid crystal device(L) constituted by a pixel having four or more sub pixels so as to reflect the light which is total-reflected from the total internal reflection prism; a polarization plate(11) installed at the optical axis of the light passed through the total internal reflection prism; and a projection lens(13) for projecting the light polarized through the polarization plate, onto a screen. |
