[Also in Division D1] Quaternary ammonium compounds are obtained by reacting 1 mole of a di- or poly-amine of general Formula I in which H is a replaceable hydrogen atom, R is an aliphatic radical with 1-6 carbon atoms or a straight or branched chain organic radical containing up to 6 carbon atoms separated from one another by one or more hetero atoms, Y is an aliphatic radical consisting of an alkylene radical with 2-8 carbon atoms or of a plurality of alkylene with 2-8 carbon atoms separated from one another by an oxygen or sulphur atom m is 0 or a whole number, n is an integer and r is 3 or higher integer provided that m + r must be equal to n + 3 with at least 2 moles of an aralkylation agent of the naphthylalkyl- and/or phenylalkyl series and the resulting product in the form of the free amine is quaternized in known manner with a C 1-6 peralkylating agent.
