1,160,343. Dyeing synthetic polyamides. CIBA Ltd. 11 July, 1967 [12 July, 1966], No. 31938/67. Heading D1B. Fibrous materials of synthetic polyamides e.g. nylon 6 or 6, 6 are dyed' with watersoluble 1:2 metal dye complex dyestuffs free from free acid groups imparting solubility in water by contacting the material at elevated temperature with an acidic dye preparation of pH 1 to 5 containing a) at least one nonionic reaction product or quaternary ammonium salt thereof formed from ethylene oxide and a C 12 C 22 aliphatic amine or mixture thereof in an amount of 5 to 30 moles ethylene oxide per mol amine or amine mixture, and b) at least one non-ionic reaction product formed from ethylene oxide and an aliphatic carboxylic acid containing at least 14 carbon atoms, or an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aryl-substituted aliphatic monohydroxy or polyhydroxy compound containing at least 14 carbon atoms, in an amount of 4 to 70 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of carboxylic acid or hydroxy compound, and wherein the ratio a:b is 1:0.2 to 1:1.5 and the ratio (a+b):dyestuff is 1:1.4 to 1:0.3. The dyeing is preferably carried out by the exhaustion method using chromium and cobalt complex dyestuffs in presence of phosphoric acid. Amines used in (a) include hexadecylamine, octadecylamine and octadecenylamine and the carboxylic acid and hydroxy compounds used in (b) include dihydroabietyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol, castor oil and sorbitan ester.
