There is provided a tampon (10) having a plurality of pledget segments (12, 14, 16) with each segment (12, 14, 16) having one or more layers of absorbent material (18) and one or more layers of semipermeable material (20). The one or more semipermeable layers (20) of each segment forms an absorption restriction boundary to the next adjacent segment that allows each segment (12, 14, 16) to absorb and expand independently from the other segments (12, 14, 16). The plurality of pledget segments (12, 14, 16) can be positioned in a coverstock bag (28).
