A metallic cap 1 having a skirt 2 with axial corrugations 9, 10 is applied to the neck 6 of a bottle, &c. having a radially-projecting rib 11 or a screw thread around its neck, the corrugations being deformed on to the rib &c. in a single transverse plane by indenting arms 8 on a capping head. The cap 1 has a ring-shaped sealing gasket 4 and an outwardly rolled lip 3. The rib 11 may be parallel to the plane of the bottle, &c. mouth 6, as shown. The axial corrugations 9, 10 may be of V- or U-shaped cross-section. The corrugations 9, 10, when indented on to the bottle, &c., grip the opposite sides of the rib 11, to hold the cap 1 in position. When the rib 11 is a screw thread, the cap 1 can be released from the bottle, &c. by turning it. The corrugations (12, 13), Fig. 4 (not shown), may alternatively be pressed under a bead (14) extending round the mouth (6<SP>1</SP>) of the bottle, &c. A capping head for indenting the caps on to the bottle, &c. neck comprises circumferentially arranged heads (30), Fig. 5 (not shown), on resilient arms (8) carried by a ring (29) secured to a spigot (23). A clamping head (21) is slidable up-and-down the spigot (23) and carries cylindrically-arranged slightly resilient fingers (33) having at their lower ends camming surfaces (34) for co-action with inclined surfaces (35) on the outer sides of the indenting fingers (30). When the clamping head (21) is pushed down on the spigot (23), the camming surfaces (34) force the fingers (30) radially inwards to indent the cap on to the bottle, &c. neck. |
