[Also in Division C2] Herbicidal compositions comprise as .an active ingredient a compound of the general formula . where R 3 and R 5 , which may be the same or different, are atoms of fluorine or chlorine and either (a) R 6 is an atom of fluorine or chlorine and R, is an group, on acytoxy group or an acylthio group, the term acyl being as defined below, or (to) R 4 is an atom of fluorine or chlorine and R 6 .is an hydroxyl group, or a salt of any of the foregoing compounds wherein R 4 or R 6 is an hydroxyl group, together with a carrier for the active ingredient comprising a solid diluent, or a liquid diluent containing a surface active agent. The term "aryl" denotes the groups -CO.X, -SO 2 .X and -P(=Y)XZ wherein Y is oxygen or sulphur and X and Z are monovalent organic hydrocrabron or substituted hydrocarbon groups. Specified solid diluents are powdered kaolin, Fuller's earth, gypsum, chalk, Hewitt's earth and china clay. The preferred liquid diluent is water, and in these compositions the active ingredient is present as solid particles or as droplets of a solution of the active ingredient in a water insoluble solvent. These water-based compositions Imay be obtained by dilution or dispersion of a concentrate, the concentrate being (a) an aqueous dispersion of the active ingredient and containing a 'surface active agent and a suspending agent, (b) a wettable powder containing the active ingredient and a solid surface-active agent with or without additional solid diluent, or (c) a solution of the active ingredient, with or without a surface-active agent, in an organic solvent. The compositions may contain additional active ingredients, paraquat and diquat being specified. The compositions may be employed as pre- or postemergence herbicides, and are also stated to exhibit pesticidal, fungicidal, nematocidal and plant growth regulating activity. The invention also comprises a method of combating unwanted vegetation which comprises applying to the locus of the unwanted vegetation or 'of seeds thereof a herbicidal composition containing as an active ingredient 2,6-difluoro-3,5-dichloro-4-hydroxy-pyridine or a salt thereof. |
