[Also in Division F2] An expanding device for interconnecting and interlocking hollow structural elements 2, 3 to form stands for display facilities, or supports for shelving, comprises a member 1 insertable within the bores of the elements, the member being divided over at least part of its length into two or more parts 10 arranged to be spread apart by means of a screw 19 threadedly engaging one of the parts and applied through the intermediary of at least one spreading apart means 18 in order, when tightened, to move the parts apart to engage the said bores, the spreading apart means being disposed in a chamber 14 within the parts of the expanding device. The screw 19, which is operable by a key inserted through a hole 17 in the tubular element 3, has a spherical end which engages the spherical ends of the elongated members 18. The parts 10 are held together by spring clips 12 as shown or by rivets which allow restricted movement of the parts. In a modification the spreading apart means 18 are replaced by balls engaged by a further ball co-operating with the cup shaped end of a screw. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 the expanding member 20 is partly divided by two cuts 21, 22; the screw 27 having a conical end engaging a single spreading apart member (26, Fig. 5, not shown) housed in the chamber 25. |
