A diesel exhaust system (2) ceramic filter (1) has a housing (3) with an inlet (5) and an outlet (6). In a cleaning process, the housing is placed upright with the gas inlet over the gas outlet. A closed aperture (7) in the housing wall is opened upstream of a soot filter and a soot trap (10) connected to the aperture. Compressed gas is admitted to the housing via the exhaust gas inlet. A rinsing agent is introduced to the housing via the exhaust gas outlet. An Independent claim is included for a diesel exhaust cleaning assembly in which rinsing agent is recovered from the trap and then returned to a reservoir for re-use. The supply of compressed cleaning gas is regulated by a throttle valve (15). Uniform flow of the cleaning gas is enhanced by a baffle plate (13). With the aperture closed, compressed gas is admitted to the exhaust system for a longer period than the rinsing agent.
