The reciprocating piston has a top land which on the combustion chamber side has at least one groove (12) on the circumference and which reaches from the circumference of the top land as far as the piston crown (2). At least eight grooves may be distributed around the circumference of the piston. The groove, or grooves, has a largest length which is measured in the groove center of the piston and at the most reaches over the height of the top land, while the greatest width measured in the circumferential direction of the piston reaches up to three times the length of the groove.
