PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a user with proper information on an image in an archive before download. SOLUTION: This retrieval system is equipped with a client device having an origination means for originating a retrieval request on a desired video material, and an access means for accessing the video material based on a uniform resource locator(URL) and an SMPTE unique material identifier(UMID), a server device having a reception/detection means for receiving the retrieval request from the client device, and detecting one or more video material items coincident substantially with the retrieval request from one or more databases, and a supply means for supplying the client device with meta-data information related to the detected video material items, the URL, and the UMID, and with at least one video housing device having a video storage means for housing the video material and the related UMID.
