PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector and a method for detecting leakage failures of cooling liquid thereof, in which an observer can easily detect the trouble of an image display, i.e., leakage of cooling liquid, in a short time. SOLUTION: The projector 100 for projecting an image onto a screen 25 comprises an image display section contained in a cabinet 24, a projection lens system 1 for projecting an image displayed at the image display section onto the screen 25, a cooling liquid containing section 4 which couples the lenses L1-L4 of the projection lens system 1 with the screen of the image display section and containing liquid for cooling the screen of the image display section, and a section 200 for guiding the cooling liquid leaking to the outside of the cooling liquid containing section 4 into the optical path of the projection lens system 1.
