Apparatus and method for reducing error propagation in a decision feedback equalizer for an ATSC vestigial sideband (VSB) receiver. The apparatus of the invention comprises a trellis decoder and a decision feedback equalizer (720) coupled to the path memory outputs (1030 1060) of the trellis decoder. The decision feedback equalizer receives a best guess for each symbol from the trellis decoder using these best guesses as estimates in channel equalization. Composed to prior art techniques feeding back the output of a slicer circuit, these best guesses have a lower error probability than the hard decisions from the slicer thus reducing error propagation. In one embodiment of the invention, a first equalizer and trellis decoder combination is used to estimate a symbol stream. Then a second equalizer and trellis decoder combination is used to further minimize error by operating on the output of the first equalizer and trellis decoder combination.
|
