A SOFC (10) providing higher power densities than PEM-based cells; the possibility of direct oxidation and/or internal reforming of fuel; and reduc ed SOFC operating temperatures. The SOFC (10) comprises a thin film electrolyte layer (12). A thick film anode layer (18) is disposed on one surface (14) of the electrolyte layer (12); and a thick film cathode layer (20) is disposed on the opposite surface (16) of the electrolyte layer (12). A method of making the SOFC (10) comprises the steps of: creating a well (38) in one side (40) of a dielectric or semiconductor substrate (30); depositing a thin film solid oxide electrolyte layer (12) on the surface of the well (38); applying a thi ck film electrode layer (18) in the electrolyte coated well (38); creating a counter well (44) in the opposite side (42) of the substrate (30), the count er well (44) abutting the electrolyte layer (12); and applying a thick film counter electrode layer (20) in the counter well (44). |
