PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antihistaminic piperidine derivative having the form IV. SOLUTION: Hydrated 4-[4-[4-(hydroxydiphenylmethyl)-1-piperidinyl]-1- hydroxybutyl]-α,α-dimethylbenzene acetic acid hydrochloride having the form IV has a visual melting point (capillary tube) in the range of 113-118 deg.C, two broad overlapping endotherms below 100 deg.C, an additional endotherm with an extrapolation at 146 deg.C as determined by differential scanning calorimetry and an X-ray powder diffraction pattern essentially as shown in the following table.
