Effluent is treated in several stages in sewage works, at least in primary settling tanks (11, 10) and secondary settling tanks (12, 13). The tanks are connected either by channels or pipelines. A continually increasing effluent intake requires an increase in settling capacity. If the above is no longer possible, a further treatment works must be constructed. The aim of the invention is the possibility of increasing the effective capacity of existing sewage works. Said aim is achieved, whereby, in conventional mechanically operating secondary settling tanks (12, 13), an additional biological treatment of the effluent is adopted, by means of filling materials, comprising a cultivation surface for biomasses, preferably in the form of floating bodies. Said filling materials can be easily arranged at low expense in existing secondary settling tanks (12, 13) or also in connecting pipelines (21). Complex measures for increasing the mechanical settling of the fluids are thus avoided. |
