The mechanism for transforming the translational movement of a piston (11) into rotation of a crankshaft (25) comprises a casing (1) in which the piston slides in a cylinder (2). The piston is connected to a crankpin (16) connected to the crankshaft by means of a connecting rod (7). The connecting rod head (8) comprises an eccentric (13) which connects the connecting rod to the crankpin and has an alternate rectilinear movement in the same direction as the piston movement. A pinion/rack (22,23) unit act on the connecting rod to drive it in one direction or another or to immobilize it in a determined position.
