PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an aliphatic polyester represented by formula (I) [(n) is an integer of 10 to 6,000] from starch. SOLUTION: The method for producing an aliphatic polyester comprises a process for hydrolyzing starch to obtain glucose, a process for oxidizing the glucose to obtain gluconolactone or gluconic acid, a process for reducing the gluconolactone or gluconic acid to obtain caproic acid, a process for chlorinating the caproic acid to obtain 5-chlorocaproic acid, a process for cyclizing the 5-chlorocaproic acid to obtainδ-caprolactone, and a process for subjecting theδ-caprolactone to a ring-opening polymerization.
