PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable compression ratio engine capable of varying the compression ratio effectively and smoothly and keeping the set ratio certainly. SOLUTION: A control rod 23 is pivoted at the connection part of a connecting rod 23 consisting of two portions so as to be bent in a shevron form, and the other end of control rod 23 is connected to a control disc 28 as a shaft swinging part by a control shaft 27. The arrangement includes a control shaft rotating means 32 such as a rack-and-pinion mechanism driven by a hydraulic cylinder and a control shaft retaining means 33 such as a braking mechanism or lock mechanism consisting of a lock pin or the like, and these means 32 and 33 can be engaged with the disc 28 in such a way as controlled independently.
