PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To economically provide a vacuum valve capable of cutting off a large current, and having excellent performance such as small fusion breaking force, stable and low contact resistance and small electrode consumption. SOLUTION: This vacuum valve is provided, in a vacuum vessel having its inside closed by a fixed-side end plate 2 and a movable-side end plate 3 respectively attached to both ends of a tubular insulation cylinder 1, with: a fixed-side electrode rod 4 fixed to the end plate 2 with a fixed-side electrode 7 formed at an end; a movable-side electrode rod 5 provided with a movable-side electrode 8 capable of contacting to and separating from the electrode 7 formed at an end; and an electrode-side shield 9 fixed to the insulation cylinder 1 and surrounding the electrode 7 and the electrode 8 for preventing the inside wall surface of the insulation cylinder 1 from being polluted by metal vapor generated from the electrode 7 and the electrode 8 in cutting off the current. A recessed part 8a is formed only on either the central part of the contact surface of the electrode 7 or that of the electrode 8.
