PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ion generation control method which can control finely a ratio of generated amounts of negative and positive ions. SOLUTION: An ion generating element 10 consists of a needlelike electrode 1, a GND conductor 4 connected to grounding potential, and an ac supply 2 which impresses alternate voltage, which changes its polarity with a predetermined cycle, between the needlelike electrode 1 and the GND conductor 4 by turns. The needlelike electrode 1 consists of a needlelike part 1a made of stainless steel SUS304 of a diameter of 1 mm, a length of 30 mm, and a tip curvature of 0.1 mm, and a planner part 1b which is integrated in this needlelike part 1a and connected to the alternate power supply 2. By changing the voltage waveform of the alternate voltage impressed to the needlelike electrode 1 using the ac power supply 2, the ratio of generation of the negative ions to the positive ions can be finely controlled.
