PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately evaluate the engine noise of the total of combustion noise and combustion injection system noise for reducing the engine noise by independently detecting the fuel injection system noise in the engine noise with high accuracy, to select and control the fuel injection mode. SOLUTION: The fuel injection system noise in ordinary injection is calculated on the basis of an engine rotating speed, the common rail pressure and the number of times of the fuel injection per one stroke (S2), and the combustion noise in ordinary injection is calculated on the basis of engine operating conditions (S3). Similarly, the fuel injection system noise in pilot injection is calculated (S4), and the combustion noise in pilot injection is calculated (S5). The sums of the fuel injection system noise and the combustion noise respectively in the ordinary injection and the pilot injection are calculated to operate the engine in the fuel injection mode of the smaller sum of the noise (S6-S8).
