An improved solenoid (10) is provided that has a fully enclosing yoke (60) with integral end cap and sleeve (64). A second, separate, or alternatively integral end cap (66) with sleeve (78) is provided to complete the magnetic yoke (60). The yoke/coil assembly (60, 40) is encapsulated with a liquid crystal polymer that has a melting temperature higher than the melting temperature of the coil bobbin (42) to provide a good bond therebetween.
