Amplification primers and methods for specific amplification and detection o f an ORF6 gene are disclosed. The primer-target binding sequences are useful f or amplification and detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae target in a variety of amplification and detection reactions. Figure (I) illustrates detection of a M. pneumoniea nucleic acid ORF6 gene target sequence in a strand displacemen t amplification (SDA) reaction.
