The invention relates to a method for operating a modular control system comprising a central processing unit (Z) and a plurality of peripheral modules (B>n<) connected thereto. According to said method, a process image of a system process to be controlled is stored in the central processing unit (Z) and cyclically exchanged between the peripheral modules (B>n<) and the central processing unit (Z).
